Do you want to do an appliance install or a full install on a Windows server? The former is far easier to set up and manage, but since it is a virtual appliance you would need an additional machine to install VUM on. If you want to install on a Windows server, be warned that it is not a trivial thing. I can put together a series of Knowledge base articles for you to go through and read.
If your primary goal is to patch your single host and update VMware tools though, the steps on the link I provided above will take a fraction of the time to complete and will not require you to add 1 or potentially 2 new VMs to your host.
Can you clarify what your final goal is? We've bounced from VMware Tools to VUM to vCenter during the course of this thread -- knowing what your concerns and ultimate goals are would help us advise you better. My final goals are to have the VMware host patched with the latest updates, and be able to provide the latest VMware tools updates to my VMware guest servers.
That product list suggests you're possibly still using an evaluation copy of ESXi, could that be possible? It would allow that host to be added to an existing vCenter. But do you also have a separate license for the vCenter install itself? It's a separate purchase, or may be part of a bundle if you purchased an Essentials bundle.
What license s did you purchase? Is this choice mainly for security, for better performance, to stay current and gain experience, or do you want to do it because some software you support will only run on a later version of VSphere and VMWare Tools? None of us are saying it is wrong or incorrect to upgrade but rather trying to get a feel for the decision making process. I'll bounce in something else here. Be really careful with virtual machine hardware versions, especially if you plan to go ahead and upgrade to the latest version of VSphere.
